About Grey Hair

Graying or whitening of hair occurs when your hair follicles stop producing melanin, the pigment that gives your hair its color.

While it is considered a normal part of aging, graying before the age of 30 in men and before 25 in women is termed premature graying.

Main Causes of Grey Hair

Genetics: This is the most common cause. If parents/grandparents turned grey early, then you are likely to do the same.

☠️ Oxidative stress: Free radicals damage the pigment cells in the hair follicles.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies - most notably, deficiencies in Vitamin B12, D, E, copper, zinc, and iron.

Stress: Chronic stress further increases oxidative damage, thereby accelerating graying.

Smoking reduces blood flow to follicles; it increases oxidative stress.

Autoimmune and thyroid disorders: Many conditions, such as vitiligo, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and pernicious anemia, can bring on early greying.

Certain medications or chemical exposure: There are certain drugs and hair dyes that can damage pigment cells.

What to Treatment & Prevention

1. Nutritional Support

Eat foods rich in:

Vitamin B12: eggs, fish, dairy, meat, fortified cereals

Copper: nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, shellfish

Iron & Zinc: spinach, lentils, beans, pumpkin seeds

Antioxidants: berries, green tea, leafy vegetables

Supplements- only if deficient and if the doctor's advice is taken:

Vitamin B-complex

Iron or copper (if lab tests show deficiency)

Omega-3 fatty acids

2. Healthy Scalp Care

Use only mild natural shampoo (no sulfates or parabens).

Massage scalp 5-10 minutes a day with oils such as coconut, amla, black seed, or curry leaf oil to improve blood flow.

Keep the scalp clean and moisturized.

3. Medical or Natural Treatments

Serums that enhance melanin production: Some dermatologists recommend topical catalase or peptide-based treatments that stimulate pigment cells.

Antioxidant therapy: Topical catalase creams or oral antioxidants that slow oxidative damage.

PRP or mesotherapy: In some cases, dermatologists inject vitamin-rich solutions to strengthen follicles.

Herbal remedies: Amla, curry leaves, and bhringraj oil have been traditionally considered to help maintain pigment.

Note: No treatment will ever be able to permanently reverse genetic grey hair, but prevention will slow it down.

❌ What Not to Do

❌ Shun frequent chemical hair dyes because they only increase damage, possibly leading to more graying later on.

❌ Don't smoke because it speeds up greying significantly.

❌ Avoid eating junk food, sugar, and highly processed foods; they increase oxidative stress.

❌ Don't pull out grey hairs; that can damage follicles.

❌ Limit excessive heat styling (straighteners, curling irons). ❌ Avoid skipping meals or crash dieting, as nutrient deficiencies can trigger greying.
