About Postpartum Hair Loss

Postpartum hair loss, also known medically as postpartum telogen effluvium, is the temporary shedding of hair beginning 2–6 months after childbirth.

This is because, during pregnancy, the high levels of estrogen prolong the growth phase of hair (anagen); hence, your hair appears thicker and full of volume.

After delivery, estrogen levels drop drastically, causing a lot of hair to enter the resting phase.

Good news: It's temporary and usually resolves within 6-12 months.

Causes of Postpartum Hair Loss

Hormonal changes - a drop in estrogen & progesterone after childbirth.

Nutrient depletion: pregnancy, lactation, or simply inadequate nutrition.

Stress & sleep deprivation: New motherhood stress may aggravate shedding.

Iron deficiency: due to blood loss during delivery.

Thyroid imbalance: Postpartum thyroiditis may cause hair loss.

Low levels of protein or vitamin D/B12.

Treatment - Step-by-Step
1. Medical & Dermatological Care

If hair loss is excessive or persistent (over 12 months):

Visit a dermatologist to rule out:

Thyroid issues, TSH test

Iron deficiency (ferritin test)

Vitamin D/B12 deficiency

What Not to Do

❌ Don't panic, it's normal and reversible.

❌ Don't use harsh chemical treatments or dyes.

❌ Don't overbrush or use tight rubber bands.

❌ Avoid crash diets because they increase hair shedding.

❌ Do not over-stress because stress hormones aggravate hair loss.

❌ Shun excessive use of hair oils that block scalp pores.

Prevention Tips

Continue prenatal vitamins at least 3–6 months postpartum.

Eat balanced, protein-rich meals daily.

Sleep 7–8 hours where possible — rest helps hormone recovery. Practice stress-relief techniques: meditation, gentle yoga, and deep breathing. Trim split ends regularly. Avoid hot showers, which dry out your scalp.
